A site called VirtualBury plans on organizing the very first 3D animated virtual music festival! When I first went on the front page I thought this must of been some kind of joke, but apparently it’s a pretty serious project with a very intriguing business model.
Ever heard of The Million Dollar Homepage? It’s a website devised by a 21 year old student at the time who brainstormed for 20 minutes thinking about ways to get rich, and thought that selling ad space for 1$ on a 1 million pixel homepage might just be the answer. Well he was right as 5 months later he was a millionaire.
Ok, back on track. VirtualBury has the same idea of selling ad space on a homepage, but the site is aimed at bands. The minimum space you can buy is 10×10 pixels for $20, making that 20 cents a pixel. Once you order your pixels, you upload a thumbnail of the design you want displayed and you’ve got yourself an everlasting digital imprint of your band on the web that links to your website or MySpace or whatever.
VirtualBury has bigger plans than just generating money with the ad spaces. Its founder Dave Paul from Manchester, who is a 3D artist designer, wants to create virtual 3D concerts for all bands that sign up, synchronizing their instruments and facial expressions to their music. I emailed him about the project, asking him to explain it in his own words. Here’s what he responded:
“The music artists and bands that buy a pixel advert on the homepage will get their very own 3d virtual music festival staged video footage created by myself and it will be uploaded onto the relevant scheduled festival gigs that I invent! Its totally virtual 3d and those who play on the event will be true virtual characters of themselves, (so if you like those artists and bands especially that will never get the chance of performing at places like glasto , v festival etc can be created to perform their own music at this virtual festival ). I intend to make monthly events for as long as possible, the first event has been scheduled for October! The virtual venue will have a Halloween feel for extra fun.
For most unsigned and artist and bands they will also get the benefit from their custom made video footage which in time will possibly give them more video exposure!
All the money I make off the advertising idea will go into VrtualBury and also a some into my daughters future as she is 10 years old and my inspiration for this idea, we are both getting excited about the interest
that has already been received from friends on myspace etc!
In a nutshell , we just want to offer some extra creative help for artist and bands to advertise and showcase their music talents online!”
I really don’t know what this will amount to but the idea is original and pretty innovative. Only a few bands have signed up for the moment and the first Halloween concert is already in motion. You can checkout Dave’s YouTube channel to have an idea of what the 3D modeling will look like. Below is the VirtualBury trailer:
