In my last post, I defined The National Parcs as the ultimate environmentalist band. Now that I have discovered The Vienna Vegetable Orchestra, I kind of take that back. This band is comprised of musicians who only play with home-made veggie instruments, and frankly it sounds totally amazing. Also makes me want to eat a nice big onion soup or something:
The orchestra was founded in 1998 by 11 musicians, and since then has produced 2 albums, Automate in 2005, and Gemise in 1999. They are currently still touring around Europe. The sounds and the overall results are quite intriguing – organic instruments do indeed produce organic-sounding music. Most veggies have warm sonic characteristics and recall animal-like noises.
I suggest reading their FAQ page which is a funny and interesting description of the band’s working habits (i.e. after a gig, “part of the vegetables which are left over after preparing the instruments go into the vegetable soup which is served to the audience after the concert”).
